We go get a new sensor and gasket install it refreshed with the right coolant. My brother comes over talking smack about his gti being better yada yada. I take the sensor out and see that the rubber ring gasket is gone and someone used gasket maker the seal it and that "seal" has failed. So I start squeezing the hoses around the flange by the kombi valve and sure enough the temp sensor spurts a fat stream of coolant right at the cone filter for the CAI. Checked the oil for milk checked coolant for oil. I notice the coolant level light is on and about the same amount of coolant gone. When I get home I notice the smell of steaming coolant. The last 2 miles have a few stop signs and I got major bogging and added sputter. I take it real easy just to get it the last 2 miles home. When I got into town with the 35/45 mph zones in between the walmart and taco bell type areas that all small towns have the car is bogging down like crazy in 1st and 2nd. So for 90% of the drive home all was good other than the 30% loss in power and the bogging/slipping feeling. That was a reason for the new clutch also. Thats not the first time it has done that and 2nd would grind if you didn't take your time pulling the shifter into 2nd so I knew the syncro was going. And 2nd gear felt like the clutch was slipping like half way through the 2nd gear pull and it felt like it was bogging down. During drive i noticed a bit more loss in power. Its all I had and it was only a few cups so no biggie. I thought maybe it had worked out some air pockets from the water pump install. Shut it down and looked at it when I left work and the water level was just slightly below the level sensor in the res ball. I started the car to make sure it would start and again got the light and beeps. After the key was on for about 30 sec to a min I get a coolant level light flashing and a few beeps.

I turn the key for the windows but dont start it and leave the key on while I smoke so the vents blow the smoke out of my face. During my break at work I sneak out to my car for a smoke. Day 7 the drive to work was the same loss in power nothing else stood out. Again no lights just felt down on power id say it felt like a 20% decrease in power in 1st and 2nd only. Now i dont do hard pulls all the time but I am heavy footed. Day 6 notice a lack of power in 1st and 2nd gear. Drove that hour home and the light didn't come back on.

I thought maybe it was the CAI so I cleared the codes plugged the SAI in and zip tied a microfiber cloth to the SAI tube that wasn't connected to the airbox. I kept a cel because of the SAI being unplugged but checked it every 2 days or so to make sure no other codes popped up after the other work that I had done.

I keep a cheap laptop in my car with a $5 ebay blue cord and the free vrs of vcds. The car ran awesome those last 7 ish days. I took the maf and connected straight to the cone then straight to the intake boot like the maf normally does. The last thing I did about a week before my current issue is put on a cone filter as the short ram cai. No issues for about 2 weeks after work was done. Everything was installed by me and the car ran like a champ! I drive a hour each direction for work most 1/2 my drive is through town at about 45 mph the other half is through the back roads kinda up the mountain at about 70mph. Short ram cai, piston and spring DV installed yellow spring and new timing belt and metal water pump kit with new belt tensionor and seals. Tinted the windows added touch screen nav, boist gage, stage 2 clutch 15 ish # smfw. Even came with the original window sticker from dealership! I sold 04 jetta sedan with 2.slow and auto and decided to get this car and make it a fun DD dad ride.
Everything worked and was in awesome shape. We're talking oil changes, spark plugs, tires timing belt you name it its in there. It legit came from a well off older couple who had a 3 inch pack with every service ever done to the car at the dealership.
I have a 02 jetta wagon gls 1.8t and 02j 5 speed. Yes I've searched and read everything on vwv and google but no luck. Noob to the forum but not to working on cars.
